When I was in college, The Gregg Reference Manual was referred to by the professors as "The Bible". Just like the title says, it covers all the bases for all your writing needs at least on the business level of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting. The book gets better with each edition adding new things to keep up with the technology of today's world. My favorite section of the book it the words that sound alike but spelled differently. Whenever I am not sure which word to use, like "Affect" and "Effect", I head to the GRM. If I am not sure on term papers or reports, I head to the GRM. It is a great book for secretaries and administrative assistants. They have added new sections to keep up with computer usage as in my days of high school and college, we were using manual and electric typewriters and computers are now the basic source for typing correspondence, reports, and all the computer software used in today's business world. I will always buy the latest edition, even though earlier editions, they only change a few words or things, but this is the best reference book to have in your library like a dictionary and thesaurus is.
I am attending college right now and I am taking a course where this book was required. I am glad it was required because I am able to use it for my other courses. I will definitely be keeping this book FOREVER, even after I graduate. This book should be given out free by the colleges to all new students that enroll in college, because it can be helpful in any of the courses where you have to write papers. i.e.: English 101,102,103, etc...AWESOME book!!! If they come out with a newer version, I will likely by that one also....
I was debating buying this book or Chicago Manual of Style (CMS).Found CMS @ my local library, and was turned off by its sheer weight/volume. Nonetheless, I opened it for a perusal, and found that its a tough book to navigate. Those are the only two cons you'll find with that book. Besides, it still remains the go-to book in the publishing business. But if you are an aspiring/pro fiction writer, then 'The Gregg Reference Manual' is the perfect fit. This book is not cumbersome, visually appealing, and easy to use.So far, I haven't seen anything this book lacks that a writer needs. I had problems like formatting: Here, specifically, it had to do with the Chapter page. I wanted to know how many line spaces down do I go before typing in the Chapter + chapter title. Other books I have say 1/3 of the way down. Of course not many people can translate that. Here, this manual was more clear -- 6 lines down. This is just one example of many.A definite recommend.FINAL NOTE: I'd recommend buying any edition from 2009 or beyond. Reason being certain updates in writing rules have been introduced e.g Instead of the use of underlined words for emphasis, italics is the 'new norm'.
I purchased this book because a professional mentor of mine shared with me how valuable her book was to her. I must admit it has the answer to seemingly any grammar question one could ask. The only challenge I face with the book is finding what I'm looking for. I am so used to using Google to simply state: "When to use then or than," that looking through a reference manual seems tedious. Overall the book is a great resource once you familiarize yourself with how to search your topic.
Really great book for editors, writers, etc. I am a scopist, and this resource is invaluable to me. My favorite section is the list of compound words that often get misspelled, like "day care" vs. "daycare." Can't beat the price. So glad I bought this.
This book contains so much information in it! It is a great book to have if you work in an office or if you are writing a lot of papers, or if you just are interested in proper writing techniques. I had to get this book for a class, and most people re-sell their school textbooks, but this one is one I will be keeping for my bookshelf forever. I really feel like it will be a handy book to fall back on later down the road in my career field.
Handy for business and school environment. Useful for an occasional reference in grammar. For example, it's easy to forget the usage of a semicolon and colon when you don't use it all the time.
