If I am not mistaken, I was supposed to receive both volumes of these books, but I only received Volume B and not Volume A. I need both for a class, and since I am renting the books (or rather, book, I guess), I am worried that it will seem as though I only returned one volume and not the other.As for the actual contents of Volume B...it's everything you can expect from a Norton Anthology: educational with a nice mixture of the well-known and the obscure. I have not had a chance to read it more thoroughly, but I quick skim through the pages left me satisfied that it is a good book for the classroom and those who have an interest in African American Literature.
I read this for an Advanced Survey of African American Literature course and absolutely loved it. It takes you through the entire history of African American Literature, beginning with the vernacular, or works such as folktales, blues, ballads and sermons that were intended for oral communication, and continuing into the modern era with authors like Alice Walker and Nikki Giovanni. Each section begins with an introduction by the editor that provides context and background for the particular chapter of the anthology. Although it is an anthology and has many shorter works, it has several full texts within it and is a rich literary history of African Americans. I would highly recommend it.
I thought this was a two-volume set. I am very upset to only receive one volume.
In previous reviews of books, I merely wrote “its required reading for a college course.†This statement is true but this set of books are enlightening. Would I have purchased them if it had not been a required text......likely not.
This is the 2nd Norton Anthology I’ve had to purchase for school. Norton Anthologies always have good content in them, however if you aren’t an English major then just rent it if possible. It’s a set of two volumes so while they are expensive, I guess you it’s okay.Btw, my copy came in wonderful condition!
The wording in description is misleading. This is to be a 2 volume set. The ISBN for the book is for the 2 volume set. No one can explain why this is or how to fix it except send it back or get vol 1 separate ðŸ˜ΕΎ Very misleading
Unable to rent so I had to buy it, these are two big books with a lot of great poems and texts. We used both books this semester.
