About the Author
David Kroenke has many years of teaching experience at Colorado State University, Seattle University, and the University of Washington. He has led dozens of seminars for college professors on the teaching of information systems and technology; in 1991, the International Association of Information Systems named him Computer Educator of the Year. In 2009, David was named Educator of the Year by the Association of Information Technology Professionals-Education Special Interest Group (AITP-EDSIG).

David worked for the U.S. Air Force and Boeing Computer Services. He was a principal in the startup of three companies, serving as the vice president of product marketing and development for the Microrim Corporation and as chief of database technologies for Wall Data, Inc. He is the father of the semantic object data model. David’s consulting clients have included IBM, Microsoft, and Computer Sciences Corporations, as well as numerous smaller companies. Recently, David has focused on using information systems for teaching collaboration and teamwork.

His text Database Processing was first published in 1977 and is now in its 13th edition. He has authored and coauthored many other textbooks, including Database Concepts, 7th ed. (2015), Experiencing MIS, 6th ed. (2016), SharePoint for Students (2012), Office 365 in Business (2012), and Processes, Systems, and Information: An Introduction to MIS, 2nd ed. (2015).

Randall J. Boyle received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Florida State University in 2003. He also has a master’s degree in Public Administration and a B.S. in Finance. He has received university teaching awards at Longwood University, the University of Utah, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has taught a wide variety of classes including Introduction to MIS, Cyber Security, Networking & Servers, System Analysis and Design, Telecommunications, Advanced Cyber Security, Decision Support Systems, and Web Servers.

His research areas include deception detection in computer-mediated environments, secure information systems, the effects of IT on cognitive biases, the effects of IT on knowledge workers, and e-commerce. He has published in several academic journals and has authored several textbooks, including Corporate Computer and Network Security, 4th ed., Applied Information Security, 2nd ed., and Applied Networking Labs, 2nd ed.

Randy lives in Virginia with his wife and three young children. He currently enjoys T-ball, swimming, and running.

This was the first book I ever picked out at the library and it opened my world to reading like I had never thought possible. Before this book I hated reading. Having dyslexia made it hard to read aloud and children can be mean. It was the worst part of school. Alanna made her into my heart and captivated me. I memorized every word until I could read it out loud as if I had no learning disabilities whatsoever. Soon I realized if I could do it with one book I could do it with every book. And so my love of reading began. Now I write my own books. You have no idea how much this book and all of your others have meant to me. Thank you

After reading Wild Magic, I decided to go back and read the beginnings before I proceeded with the rest of that series. I had been reluctant to read the Song of the Lioness series because some of the reviews I’d read indicated that the series was for teenage girls. Maybe so. I can see how it’s a great introduction to fantasy for teens. But, I’m a 65 year old man who’s thoroughly enjoyed the 2 Tamara Pierce novels I’ve read! She’s a good storyteller. The characters are engaging and well drawn. The fact that it’s such an easy read doesn’t detract from the enjoyment at all.

One little girl, Alanna, wants nothing more than to fight and defend her realm. Unfortunately, her family is sending her to study the magical arts instead. This sounds like an ordinary premise to a middle-grade series, a thinly veiled attempt to show young girls they can be anything they want to be when they grow up.This is not an ordinary book, nor is it solely for pre-teens. The story is imaginative, and the language doesn’t pander to young readers. Alanna is stubborn, determined, but kind and without attitude, which is refreshing for this genre. She is easy to root for, as are the supporting characters, from knights-in-training to princes to thieves.The “Alanna books,” as they’re described in my household, are a staple in any young girl’s literary path to maturity. Tamora Pierce has created an absorbing world with irresistible characters. Feminism was never a cornerstone of my adolescence, and I still loved the Alanna books more than life itself. I can only imagine how much more I would have treasured them if I’d identified with the gender discrimination Alanna faces.If you like to root for the underdog, if you feel a kindred connection to women empowerment stories, if you are drawn to the Middle Ages fantasy world, if you enjoy adventure and suspense and secrets and magic and—Just read the Alanna books. My copies are worn, torn, and tattered. I first read them when I was Alanna’s age, and I’ve probably read each of them thirty times over the past fifteen years. Of all the books of my pre-teen years, these are the most memorable.The books are sold separately, and the only disappointment is the redone cover illustrations in the re-released versions. My copies have the original drawings of the mass market paperbacks published in the 1980s. You can try to find them, and you can also buy all four books together in an Amazon set.

I'm not gonna lie I have read all of the lioness quartet 10 times over ever since I was introduced to the series as a child, I beat my physical copies to death at how much I read them and they got lost in a move when I was older. I am reminded how much I loved the adventures of Alanna and all her friends and I am so giddy to finish this series and move on to all the others I got e-book form.If you have a little girl do her a favor and buy this series, because if Alanna I felt like I could do anything that boys could do but I can do it better!

If you're on the fence about buying this book (or the series) for a young book-lover you know, don't be: BUY IT. And then go buy Tamora Pierce's other book series. My personal recommendation would be The Immortals Series.This one my all-time favorite book series. I got my first copies when I was teenager (somewhere between 12 and 14? I don't really remember, it's been a while - I'm 29 now) from my mom because she loved them she was younger and thought I would too. This is an old series, first published in 1983 and it's still fantastic! I re-read my copies every few years and purchased this newest edition recently for the daughter of a friend who loves fantasy and adventure books as much as I do. I wanted her to have her own copy that she could treasure as much as I've treasured mine all these years.

I first picked up this novel as a teenager. Now I finally have my own hardback copy! This book had me hooked in the first few chapters. I knew I wanted to be just like Alanna when I grew up! She is a very strong character who you really grow to respect. You must read this series!!

I was an avid reader as a youth, and burned through as much in this genre as I could. But, as a boy, I always steered clear of anything focused on girls, heroines etc. Fast forward a few decades and I have a daughter. So now I find myself catching up on YA (young adult) fiction, trying to have a bunch or recommendations for my girl.This was a friend's recommendation and I just read it this weekend (well this and the follow up, now I'm on the third book of the quartet. I think this is a great book for young women. (Tweens I'd guess, but whenever their reading level gets here.) The story line is one of a girl who does not want her biology to shape her destiny. There are clear hurdles to being a knight as she wishes, and the book does a fair job of pointing out the difficulties of the central character who by dint of personal effort slowly but surely learns to stand on her own two feet.

I enjoyed this book. Robison had difficulty all of his life relating to people, emotions, social situations. He was incredibly gifted in understanding electronics and math, but normal conversations baffled him. It wasn't until he was 40 yrs old that he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome - a form of autism. In this memoir he recounts his awkward childhood, few friends, the butt of jokes, being bullied. Even though he tested far above his schoolmates in intelligence, he dropped out of school before graduating. His home life was chaos, with an alcoholic father and a mother with mental issues. His expertise in electronics led to small jobs fixing amplifiers for local rock bands, and finally as the electronics special-effects guy for the band KISS. He entered the corporate world helping design inter-active games and early video games, but finally left when he was promoted to management and didn't like it (managing people was difficult, he was not able to use his hands and expertise, and the rat-race stress was too much). He went back to mechanics and opened a luxury car repair business. The parts of the memoir where he discusses his feelings and frustrations about relationships, and the Asperger's-related issues, are very good. But (as other reviewers have noted) there is way too much technical stuff about retrofitting fire-breathing guitars and designing games. Overall, a good memoir, if you can kind of scan over the super-techie parts.

John Elder, you are awesome for what you have overcome! We have a seven year old (also named John) who was diagnosed a few months ago. Trouble in school, self hate and other things are big things already. This memoir opened my eyes to an understanding of what we are dealing with on a daily basis; his anxiety; his lack of understanding at others expressions in speech, and body language; his frustration with other people not understanding his point the first time (He hates explaining things to "stupid" people). THANK YOU for sharing your story, it is amazing to see the hope of a bright future, the perseverance of someone who kept on trying new things and learned to work through difficulties and find a measure of satisfaction with life in spite of emotional and social adversity. People who read this book need to be sure and read the Preface and Prologue as they are an essential part of the book, as well. I read cover to cover with a pencil, marked it up with points to review and then went back and read the entire thing again.

My grandson was recently diagnosed as autistic. Being one of his caregivers for the last 4 years, I had not seen a difference in his actions and mine as a child or some even now. After scoring high in an Autism Spectrum Quotient test online, I spoke to my therapist. He suggested I read this book. After reading, pieces of my childhood started to fall into place and questions unanswered for the past 50 years began to make sense. This is a good read for anyone who suspects they may be on the spectrum, knows someone on the spectrum, or just wants to know more about autism.

I have a young son who is 4 years old. He is atypical but very subtle when you meet him. Most people think his "traits" (sensitivity to sound, late potty train, echoing (repetitions of words), delay lack of communication flapping of arms when excited, lack of play with others) will be outgrown eventually. However, highly intelligent recognize letters and counts to 200 at age 2, reads, writes, spells, memorize downloadable from videos at age 2 1/2 years. As with motherly instincts, I insisted to the pediatrician that I need to see specialists which with persistency eventually happened. So with his second follow up in a few weeks with a child's developmental specialists, I decided to do some research by reading and watching videos of Aspergers. I don't know what the results will be with my son but at least I can be more knowledgeable about this topic.This gives you understanding of how Aspergerians deal with social aspects, why they do what they do and that despite this condition (NOT a disease), they can still have a family, career....a fulfilling life. The only part that I didn't really care for is the details of his interests (experiments, pyrotechnics, trains). It was a bit boring to me but after reading this book, you will understand why. Overall, I think families should look into this book as a way to understand the perception of this way of life.

I read this book when it was new before the advent of Amazon into my life. I love this book--the way that it is written and the impact that it had on me as a person. I did not know about Asperger. Now I take the time to realize that not everyone comes to me will have everything I thought that a human would have. I realize we all have differences--sometimes you can notice these as Asperger's. It made me realize I have no concept about what life has given the other person so now I do not judge. I just listen.

This book is funny, insightful and eye opening. It opens up a window into the life of someone who has Asperger's Syndrome. John Robinson shares his story in a no nonsense way, it's totally honest and makes no excuses. It was by far one of the easiest books for me to read. It flowed and kept my attention throughout, from beginning to end. It was sweet in a lot of ways and a bit shocking in others, but I was able to get a real sense of how many children and adults live their daily lives who are on the spectrum. John Robinson was really likable and its hard to believe he wasn't able to make many friends as you really can see his personality shine through. I loved seeing the interactions with his brother and how it changed over the years. If you have a child on the spectrum, know of a child on the spectrum, or even if you don't this is a great afternoon read.
